Man Accused of Assaulting Police Officer Surrenders

Rickie Korey "Woo" Powell turned himself into the Clarke County jail on Tuesday, police said.

A man with ties to Oconee County who was wanted in Athens on robbery and assault charges surrendered himself to the Clarke County Jail Tuesday afternoon, police said.

Rickie Korey "Woo" Powell is accused of assaulting an Athens-Clarke County uniformed officer during a robbery of the BP Gas Station located at 4000 Lexington Road last Thursday, April 18.

Following the incident in Athens, Oconee County Sheriff's deputies with permission searched a relative's home on Farmington Road, Powell's last known address, but did not locate him there, according to an incident report.

Authorities launched a public search for Powell Saturday afternoon and Crime Stoppers offered a reward for tips leading to his arrest.

Powell was booked on two counts of aggravated assault and one count each of obstruction of an officer, robbery and probation violation, according to jail records.
