Man Charged in Oconee County Stabbing

For allegedly stabbing a man known to him, a 55-year-old Oconee County man faces a charge of aggravated assault.

According to an incident report, Oconee County Sheriff's deputies were called to Pinewood Estates South mobile home park on Epps Bridge Road around 1:30 a.m. on July 28 where a man in his 50s had reportedly been stabbed by a man he knew.

The victim was transported by EMS to an area hospital with one non-life threatening stab wound to the abdomen, Sheriff Scott Berry said.

Deputies met with Billy Joe Furr who admitted to having had an argument with the injured man.  He said he had been punched in the stomach and was only defending himself; he did not admit to stabbing the victim. Deputies searched  Furr and found a folding knife in his right front pocket that had what appeared to be blood on the blade, which Furr told them was catfish blood, according to the report.

"As the case developed, it was determined that the suspect was in fact the culprit," a deputy wrote.

Furr was arrested and charged with aggravated assault. As of 12:30 p.m. Monday, he remained behind bars at the Oconee County Jail.
