Update: GBI Investigating Death Of Woman Jailed In Oconee for DUI

Updated 12pm, July 17:

A 49-year-old Colbert woman brought to the Oconee County Jail Tuesday night by the Georgia State Patrol on a DUI charge died while in custody, authorities say.

"Per state law on an in-custody death, we have called in the GBI to work the investigation," Chief Deputy Lee Weems of the Oconee County Sheriff's Office wrote in an email to Patch.

A GBI agent told the Athens-Banner Herald the woman arrived at the jail around 10 p.m., and 40 minutes later she was found in distress.

The jail staff called EMS, according to Weems, and the woman was taken to Athens Regional Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.

Coroner Ed Carson identified the woman as Traci Kesler and said that her body has been sent for autopsy.
