Crime Report: String of Shoplifting Incidents Around Holidays

The following information was gathered from Oconee County Sheriff's Office reports and highlights incidents reported Dec. 19-28.

Burglary: Sometime between 7 p.m. on Dec. 27 and 1:15 a.m. on Dec. 28, someone entered a home in the 1000 block of Barkwood Drive and took a TV from the living room and a gun from a nightstand.  An adult son was home at the time and playing musical instruments in the basement.

Property Damage: Two sprinkler heads and sod in the front yard of a 1100 block Mallard Circle residence were damaged between 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Dec. 27.

Shoplifting: Loss prevention officers at reported two women were concealing items inside bags and tried to leave through the Garden Center on Dec. 27.  Deputies found $144 worth of clothing in their possession.  The women, both age 22, were charged with misdemeanor theft by shoplifting.

Theft of Lost/Mislaid Property: A man reported someone stole a backpack that he left in the men’s dressing room of ’s department store on Dec. 27. A Nintendo 3DS, games and earphones valued at $250 were inside the backpack.

Theft of Package: A resident of Whitehead Road reported the theft of a package left on his front porch by UPS.  The theft occurred on Dec. 22 between around 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.  The package was worth $485.

Theft of Firearm: On Christmas Day, a resident of the 4000 block of Greensboro Highway reported the theft of a Harrington and Richardson .22 caliber revolver.

Burglary: Sometime between Nov. 26 and Dec. 25 a burglary reportedly occurred at an 1100 block address of Eaglewood Drive.  Jewelry valued at $2,175 was taken.

Shoplifting: Deputies were called to Walmart where a shoplifting suspect reportedly tried to steal $95.57 worth of merchandise on Dec. 24 around 4:30 p.m.

Found Cigarette Butts: Deputies collected seven cigarette butts in a cul-de-sac in front of an 1100 block residence of Tangle Drive on Dec. 24.

Shoplifting: A woman was arrested at Walmart for allegedly shoplifting on Dec. 24 around 3 p.m.  She was charged with misdemeanor theft by shoplifting.

Shoplifting: Deputies took a shoplifting suspect into custody on Dec. 24 at Walmart for reportedly trying to take $94. 45 worth of merchandise. The suspect was charged with misdemeanor theft by shoplifting.

Shoplifting: A suspect was detained at Walmart on Dec. 23 around 8 a.m. after loss prevention officers said she was trying to conceal items and leave the store without paying.  The woman admitted to having placed children’s clothing in a black cloth bag and was charged with misdemeanor theft by shoplifting.

Shoplifting:

Theft: A washer and dryer were taken from a shed behind a residence in the 1800 block of Hog Mountain Road sometime between 1 p.m. on Dec. 21 and 12 p.m. on Dec. 23.

Identity Theft:  An Oconee County man told deputies his bank notified him of fraudulent charges to his account made between Dec. 19-23. 

Burglary: Neighboring homes were burglarized on Dec. 22 between 9:35 a.m. and 8 p.m. Deputies were called to Greenwood Drive where a complainant said she found her neighbor’s front door wide open.  A 42-inch TV was taken.  The woman said she hadn’t gone into her home yet and was concerned someone may have burglarized her home, too.  Deputies cleared the residence and found the woman’s front door was also open.  A TV, nine video games, cell phones, shoes, and a checkbook were stolen from that unit.

Aggravated Stalking: A woman reported having received four text messages and phone calls on Dec. 11 from her husband, from whom she is separated. A temporary protective order was issued on Dec. 9 prohibiting contact.

Burglary: A resident of a 1600 block home on Cherokee Circle found a man rummaging through a carport on Dec. 21 around 10:30 a.m., removing a toolbox and placing it into a vehicle in the driveway.  The resident exchanged words with the man, then called his landlord to ask if someone was supposed to be in the carport.  When he learned that no one was granted permission to be there, the resident called deputies.  Three toolboxes were taken along with a drill combo set collectively valued at $450.

Missing Cash: A resident of a 1100 block residence of Kenway Drive reported $1,200 cash was taken from her home sometime between Dec. 10-20.

Threats: A woman reported her ex-husband was sending threatening text messages to her and her daughter related to a custody dispute.

Shoplifting: Video showed a female suspect attempting to steal merchandise from Walmart on Dec. 19 around 3:15 p.m. She was arrested and charged with misdemeanor theft by shoplifting.

Criminal Damage to Property: Deputies were called to a 1100 block residence of Mcrees Mill Road on Dec. 20 where a barbed wire fence surrounding a horse field had been damaged. The suspect admitted to the damage and said he did it “with good reason” and offered to replace the barbed wire fence with an electric fence that wouldn’t harm the horses. The complainant said that offer would be acceptable.

Fraud: On Dec. 19, the owner of a construction company reported a former bookkeeper forged checks, secured credit in his own name and made unauthorized charges exceeding $235,000 between November of 2009 and September of 2011.  The report has been turned over to Investigations.
