Crime Report: Multiple Burglaries, Car Break-ins, and Thefts

The following information was gathered from Oconee County Sheriff's Office reports and highlights incidents reported between Oct. 28-30.

Theft of motor vehicles- Two cross country motorcycles were reportedly taken from the garage of a 1400 block Oconee Crossing Circle address between 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 29 to 5 a.m. Oct. 30.

Entering auto- A resident of Elder Court reported someone entered his unlocked truck and took a chainsaw sometime between 12:30-6 p.m. on Oct. 30. 

A couple of items were reportedly taken from a vehicle parked at a 1000 block address of Vestview Court on Oct. 29 between 2 and 8 a.m.

Burglaries- A television and remotes were taken from a 1400 block residence of Jefferson Avenue around 11:20 p.m. on Oct. 29.  Deputies found an open window in the front bedroom of the home that the owner said had not been left that way.  A door was also open.

was burglarized around 1:20 a.m. on Oct. 29.  A security alarm notified authorities and deputies met with a key holder.  Though all doors and windows appeared to be locked, upon entering the building, deputies report there was evidence that a burglary had taken place.

Someone entered a 1000 block Moreland Drive residence on Oct. 28 by pushing an air conditioner out of a rear window.  A laptop and purse were taken.  The burglary allegedly occurred between 7:50-9:34 p.m.

A burglar kicked in the back door of a 1900 block Snows Mill Road address on Oct. 28 sometime between 10:30 a.m. and 4 p.m., rummaged through drawers and cabinets, and broke a wooden chest in the bedroom.  A flat screen television and $40 cash were taken. 

Car break-ins - The owner of reported two vehicles had been broken into on his property around 6:20 p.m. on Oct. 29. He told deputies his staff had removed several teenage boys earlier in the evening.  Windows were broken out of a locked Hyundai Santa Fe and locked Dodge Grand Caravan and purses, a cell phone, and a camcorder were among stolen items.

Sometime between 6-9 p.m. on Oct. 29, someone broke the passenger side front window of a Nissan Murano parked at .  Two purses were taken.

Thefts by taking- Copper components of a heat and air unit outside of a 1000 block address of Echo Trail were removed sometime between Oct. 22 and 4 p.m. on Oct. 29.  Cost of replacement was not immediately known.

Between Oct. 15 and Oct. 28, a hand push mower was taken from a 1000 block address of Ridgeview Lane.

Accident and DUI arrest - Deputies responded to an Overlook Ridge Road address around 3:30 a.m. on Sunday where an the driver of an SUV had crashed through a fence and trees and stopped on top of a tiller.  The driver was not injured, but was arrested for DUI. Sherildon Jermaine Scott, 32, of Baxter Street in Athens, was charged with DUI and failure to maintain lane.

Identity thefts- An Oconee woman reported unknown charges on her bank account in the amount of $104.89 on Oct. 28.

On Oct. 29, an Oconee man told deputies there were $304.27 in fraudulent charges on his bank account from a Toys R Us located in California.

Shoplifting- An employee of was allegedly captured on video taking two android cell phones, placing them in a shopping cart, and taking them to a men's employee restroom.  Another employee reportedly found the boxes there.  Zabulom Malcom Tillman, 30, of Paris Street in Athens, was charged with theft by shoplifting on Oct. 28.

Deputies searched for a Hispanic male near Wal-Mart on Epps Bridge Parkway around 1:50 p.m. on Oct. 28 after a security officer said the man was attempting to steal two cases of beer, motor oil, and a filter.  The officer said the man entered the store and purchased the items.  The man reportedly took them to his truck and returned to get the same items, only this time he left though a different exit and did not pay for them; he carried the receipt for the purchased items with him. The officer said he believed the man tried to do this at all 3 exits, but during the third attempt, the suspect saw deputies and fled on foot. The security officer told deputies he believes the man had taken items in the same way in the past.
