Crime Report: Vandal Shoves Candy Bar into Car's Gas Tank

The following information was gathered from Oconee County Sheriff's Office reports and highlights incidents reported Nov. 14- Nov. 20.

Car Vandalized: A vandal pried open a gas door on a Honda Accord parked at a Kingsmill Run address and forced a candy bar into the gas refueling tube.  The incident occurred sometime between 12 p.m. on Nov. 16 and 8 a.m. on Nov. 18, the victim told authorities.  Deputies found visible pry marks on the driver's side rear quarter panel.  The victim will consult with a mechanic to find out the extent of the damages and report back to the .

Shoplifting Arrests: Two Athens women were arrested on shoplifting charges after leaving department store on Nov. 17. Deputies stopped the women in a Toyota Corolla on Jordan Drive and a store manager identified them as the shoplifting suspects.  Nineteen items of children's clothing worth $380 were returned to the store.

Harassment: On Nov. 15, a woman reported her husband had been receiving messages on his cell phone for two months threatening to destroy his wife's public image and reputation through the release of photos and videos.  A threat was also made to harm the woman's if certain conditions weren't met, she told deputies.  The case was turned over to investigators.

Burglary: Deputies responded to an alarm at Jennings Mill County Club around 2:30 a.m. on Nov. 16.  They found a door to the restaurant/bar area had been forcibly entered, however, nothing was reported missing.

Copper Theft: Copper was removed from an air conditioning unit outside a 1000 block residence of Echo Trail.  The theft happened sometime between Nov. 9 and Nov. 20, the victim said. The unit had been dismantled and only the copper parts were taken.  The victim estimates the damage will cost $3,500 to repair.

Drug Search at County Schools: A routine search with K-9 units at found one male juvenile had rolled up less than one ounce of marijuana inside a pair of socks inside a locker. A smoking device was also found in the boy's locker.  The boy told deputies he had been smoking in the new gym before weightlifting class.  He was processed as a juvenile and released to his parents.

Entering Auto: A resident of Glen Lane reported someone entered his unlocked Dodge Caravan sometime between 12 p.m. on Nov. 9 and 8 a.m. on Nov. 14.  A laser jet printer and a scanner were taken.

Identity Theft: An Oconee County man told deputies last week he believes someone has been opening fraudulent accounts in his name.  He said he suspects it has been going on for years but until recently receiving a letter from a collection agency in another man's name, nothing negative had ever appeared on his credit report.

Burglary:  A resident of the 6000 block of High Shoals Road reported last week that between Oct. 14 and Oct. 20, two gold rings, valued at $5,700, were taken from a bedroom.

Theft: A Grayson Lane resident told deputies a power inverter worth $230 was taken from the home.  Someone staying at the home may be responsible for the theft, the victim said.

Identity Theft: After his truck was stolen in Columbia, SC earlier this month, an Oconee County man reported someone has tried to open credit card accounts in his name.  The man told deputies there was personal information in the truck at the time it was stolen.  One fraudulent card has since been used in Columbia and authorities there require a report of identity theft in the man's home jurisdiction before the fraud can be investigated.

Battery: Deputies were dispatched to a Grayson Lane residence where a physical altercation had already happened on Nov. 19.  At the home, they found an 18-year-old girl sobbing with red marks on her upper back and red knuckles on her hand.  The girl's mother had a bloody nose from being hit in the face during an argument with her daughter.  The teenager was arrested on a charge of battery.
