Cause of Vacant Mobile Home Fire In Bogart 'Cannot Be Determined'

Because the mobile home burned completely and there is a lack of evidence, the state fire marshal's office does not plan to investigate, Oconee County Fire Chief Bruce Thaxton says.

The cause of a at 1900 Atlanta Highway near Osceola Avenue Monday night "cannot be determined," according to Oconee County Fire Chief Bruce Thaxton.

Firefighters contained the blaze around the mobile home and let it burn itself out.  Tuesday morning it again.

"Since the mobile home was abandoned, and it had completely burned to the ground before fire apparatus arrived, there is no way to determine the cause," Thaxton wrote in an email to Patch. "We checked the area and found no flammable liquids or witnesses to advise us how the fire started."

The home had been vacant for two years, he said.

The mobile home is listed under the ownership of Roger Darrell Thornton, who died in 2010, according to the Oconee County Property Appraisal Office.  Its last known value was $5,815. Online property tax records show the land parcel, 3.2 acres, belongs to Jennifer Thornton Haley of Athens and that it's valued at $53,922.

The fire department has notified Georgia's Fire Marshal's Office, Thaxton said.

"State Fire Marshal Michael Crosby is aware of the fire, and he agrees - that due to lack of evidence since (the) mobile home was burned completely- that he would not be investigating," Thaxton explained.
