Update: Accident with Fatality in Oconee County Shuts Down Section of Atlanta Highway

The single-vehicle crash happened around 7:30 a.m. Monday on Atlanta Highway between Osceola Avenue and Dials Mill Road in Bogart, authorities report. The GSP has identified the victim.

A Winder man died in a single vehicle traffic accident Memorial Day morning in Oconee County, according to Chief Deputy Lee Weems of the Oconee County Sheriff's Office.

The Sheriff's Office sent a Nixle alert just after 8 a.m., stating emergency personnel were at the scene of the crash on Atlanta Highway between Osceola Avenue and Dials Mill Road in Bogart.

Weems said a Dodge pickup truck was headed eastbound toward Athens when it went off the road and hit a tree. A spokesman for the Georgia State Patrol said the driver, Benjamin Fitzpatrick, 31, of Winder, was killed.   There were no passengers.

Along with deputies and the Georgia State Patrol, Oconee County Fire Rescue and EMS responded.

Both lanes were closed for about two hours.

 

Correction: The victim was not ejected as earlier reported.  He had to be extricated from the truck, Chief Weems said. The article has been changed.
