UGA Ice Dogs Beat Georgia Tech in Savannah Civic Center to earn second place in Hockey Classic

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The University of Georgia Ice Dogs hockey team finished in second place in the Savannah Tire Hockey Classic this past weekend after defeating Georgia Tech on Saturday night in front of a sold out crowd of more than 5,600 at the Savannah Civic Center.

The Ice Dogs beat Georgia Tech by a score of 9 to 3. The Ice Dogs compete in the Savannah Tire Hockey Classic each January along with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Florida Gators, Florida State Seminoles, The Citadel and South Carolina Gamecocks.

Now that the UGA Ice Dogs have a home rink in Athens, Ga., at The Classic Center, the center anticipate tournaments of this size for future games. The convention center in downtown Athens is now the new home of the UGA Ice Dogs, whereas the team previously played in Duluth, Ga.

The Classic Center will celebrate the grand opening of its ice rink April 8-9 with an ice show by Cirque de la Symphonie and a premiere UGA Ice Dogs hockey game on their new home rink.

The Savannah Tire Hockey Classic, dubbed “The rumble in the rink,” has been a tradition for UGA Hockey since 1999. Georgia has won the tournament six times and been runner-ups seven times in the tournament’s 16 year history.
