Is the Role of Dad in the Home Changing Significantly?

The number of stay-at-home dads in the United States has doubled in the last decade. Does this mean the role of dad in the home is shifting?

According to a story in Time, it is a different time now when it comes to stay-at-home dads. Not only has the number doubled in the last decade, but much of the stigma has gone too. Even as recently as 2010, dads were not so quick to own up to ever considering staying home with the kids. But just a year later, researchers reported a different response when questioning 1,000 working dads. When asked if they would consider ditching their day job for a full time parenting role in the home, 53 percent said if their spouse made enough money, they would do it.

Further research also found that it was a misconception that most stay-at-home dads are men who have lost their jobs and are just marking time until they can find another job. While it is the case for some, it is a very small percentage. The new stay-at-home dad is happy with his role, even if it was the economy that put him there. However, stay-at-home dads still only make up only about 3 or 4 percent of households with a full time stay-at-home parent.

Our question today is, do you think this trend is on a course to significantly change the role of parenting? If it has doubled in the last 10 years, do you think it will one day get to a point where there are as many stay-at-home dads as there are stay-at-home moms?

My household is efficiently run by a Work-from-home dad who keeps us all on task!

Does he do the laundry, too?

Indeed he does! Better yet, he does the dishes! A man among men for sure.
