Facebook is claiming that a new trend, cash mobs, are trending all over social media websites. Have you seen one for your area? According to an article on Facebook’s News page, calls are going out on Facebook for groups to target a local business and then plan a cash mob. The move is an effort to support local businesses and foster a sense of community – in real as opposed to virtual life.
The way it works is a group uses social media to plan a meet at a local store of choice and spend at least $20 at that store. The chosen location is kept secret until the day of the planned cash mob. The trend is reported to be branching out as an international movement to help small businesses and March 24, 2012 was designated International Cash Mob Day. There is even one now planned for Walton County on May 26 in downtown Monroe.
Have you heard of a cash mob taking place anywhere? Do you think it will catch on enough to make a difference?
