Oconee Farmers Market Thrives Rain or Shine

By Elizabeth Poland

It may not come as a shock to say this summer has been especially wet. To all those who have dared to venture out in this sporadic weather to visit the market, your market's vendors thank you.

Some may think it is crazy or dangerous for the market to continue during these frightful thunderstorms. However, many do not realize that these vendors farm in the rain and sell in the rain.

Farmers have to adapt to weather conditions regardless of how severe or diverse when cultivating their crops. They cannot simply take the day off, stay inside and watch a movie, leaving the day's work for tomorrow.

Our farmers must respond to and work with the weather we given for not only their livelihood, but everyone else's too.

To say this summer's weather has challenged farmers is a definite understatement, but due to hard work, passion and diligence, our farmers have provided some of their best bounties yet!

So although it would be easier to take a break on a rainy day, rest assured that our farmers are still working hard to provide their best goods every Saturday and Tuesday market!

So, rain or shine, your local farmers will be at the market this Saturday from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Courthouse in Downtown Watkinsville and on Tuesday from 4 until 7 p.m. at the Watksinville First Christian Church.

This Week's Bounty:

  • corn
  • tomatoes ( The Tomato Lady is back!)
  • squash
  • zucchini
  • mushrooms
  • blackberries
  • blueberries
  • strawberries
  • honey
  • beef
  • pork
  • eggs
  • bread
  • goat cheese
  • pasta
  • pies
  • plants
  • flowers
  • handmade items
  • and much more!
The market will feature live music from Tre Powell and free coffee and water, as always.

Also, check out our blog here to read about our vendors, recipes and other market happenings.
