The Oconee Warriors tennis team lost both matches Friday afternoon to perennial tennis powerhouse Westminster in a non-region matchup. However, considering the stiff competition, Dan Gruetter's team may have found a few bright spots to build on in the process. The Wildcats won 3-2 over the Warrior boys, and 4-1 over the Lady Warriors.Β
The Lady Warriors won at number one singles as Jordan England defeated Rachel Corbin 6-4, 6-0 to keep her 2013 record perfect with a 10-0 record. Katy Kane fought hard at #2 singles vs Simrun Mithwani, before falling in a close third set tiebreaker 6-4, 5-7, 10-5. The loss drops the Ladies' record to 5-5 overall.
For the boys, Will McDonald lost 6-1, 6-1 at #1 against Al Hill, but the Warriors got an upset win on court two as Drew Horsley fought off a comeback attempt by Stephen Solms, to win in a three set tiebreaker 6-3, 2-6, 10-7. The win was Horsley's 11th of the year and, like Jordan England, kept his season record perfect. The Warriors also got a big win at #2 doubles, where Zach Miner and Chandler Shields combined for an impressive straight set win, 7-6, 6-4 over Jimmy White and Connor Hutchins. The Warrior men are now 6-5 overall. All 5 of their losses this season have come by a 3-2 score.
