Mars Hill Widening on Schedule, Oconee County Public Works Director Reports

The purchase of rights of way for the widening of Mars Hill Road from SR 316 to Butler's Crossing is progressing on schedule, Oconee County Public Works Director Emile Beshara reports.

The purchase of needed rights of way for the widening of Mars Hill Road from SR 316 to Butler’s Crossing is progressing on schedule, and actual construction on the roadway is expected to be underway late next year or early in 2014.

Emil Beschara, Oconee County Public Works director, gave the Citizen Advisory Committee on Land Use and Transportation Planning a status report on land acquisition for the widening project at its meeting on Sept. 11.

The widening of Mars Hill Road from SR 316 to Watkinsville was one of the Oconee County projects included on the list of roadway improvements for northeast Georgia that voters turned down on July 31, but Beshara indicated the construction of Phase 1 of the project is going ahead on schedule.

Beshara took up most of the LUTPC meeting with his review of the Mars Hill Road project, but he began by telling the Committee that the state has agreed to create two southbound lanes as the Oconee Connector crosses SR 316. At present, only one lane crosses SR 316.
