Gap Between County Budget Requests and Projected Revenue Worse Than Previously Predicted

Oconee County commissioners were told tonight that the gap between budget requests and revenue projections for fiscal year 2012 is worse than previously predicted.

Oconee County commissioners got the bad news tonight that the gap between budget requests and revenue projections for fiscal year 2012 is nearly twice the $2 million difference discussed earlier.

The commissioners told Finance Director Jeff Benko to toss out the budget requests and come back to the Board next week with a budget frozen at the 2011 level of $20.8 million. They also told him to find a way to balance that budget.

That won’t be easy.

Tax increases, cutbacks in the hours libraries and parks are open, and increased spending from the reserve fund all were mentioned.

The commissioners agreed to meet again at 7 p.m. on May 23 in the courthouse to see more precisely what a flat budget means for the various departments and officers and to explore precise ways to bridge the gap.
