UPDATE: Pre-fireworks Activities Canceled in Oconee County

The fireworks display is still planned for 9:30 p.m.

UPDATE (as of 3:45pm)  Plans have changed.  Here's the latest information from the OCPRD:

"Park and Emergency Management officials have cancelled pre-fireworks activities for the Oconee 4th of July Spectacular.  Fireworks are stilled planned to be fired at approximately 9:30pm.  Listen to WMSL 88.9 FM for pre-fireworks interviews, updates and listen live for choreographed music while you view the fireworks.  You may view the fireworks from improved parking surfaces only at Herman C. Michael Park, Oconee Veterans Park, Oconee County Civic Center, Oconee County High School, Briarwood Baptist Church, Oconee Presbyterian Church and other surrounding shopping centers and parking areas."

Get ready for the fireworks!

After closely watching the weather forecast all week, organizers of the second annual Oconee 4th of July Spectacular have given the event the green light for tonight.

Oconee County Parks and Recreation Director John Gentry sent the following email to Patch and other media outlets at 11:15 am:

"Happy 4th of July: Oconee Veterans Park and field conditions are excellent for today’s Oconee 4th of July Spectacular.  We are a go for the event.  We may experience light mist and showers however no severe weather is expected."

The event begins at 6:30 pm with games, entertainment and activities, but spectators can arrive at Oconee Veterans Park as early as 5:30 pm to claim a spot.
