The Bee Lady

I work to increase road safety by decreasing distracted driving and supporting the usage of seat belts. Here's an introduction to my blogs.

This is my first blog post, so I'm going to introduce myself as a precursor to my following blog posts. I have been working to increase road safety since I was thirteen, when I wrote the children's book Safety with Bee a Buckler. This book educates youth on seat belt safety, as well as young child car restraints, helmet use, not texting and driving, etc. It's basically a kid's first step into how to be safe on the road.

After that, I became more involved, speaking at National Association of Women Highway Safety Leaders conferences in Savannah and then two years later in Cincinnati. I got involved in the National Organization of Youth Safety, and most recently attended their Distracted Driving Summit in Washington D.C. I also was at the kickoff of the Decade of Action at the Georgia capital with the Bee and a copy of my book.

In the NOYS conference in D.C., I got the idea to do a Georgia Distracted Driving conference, which I am in the process of planning now. My next event, however, will be in May. May is Global Youth Traffic Safety Month, and I plan to celebrate by hosting a 5k race as part of the Long Short Walk (Run) campaign going on right now.   http://www.makeroadssafe.org/longshortwalk/Pages/homepage.aspx

Well, here's my introduction! Keep up with my blog to follow my journey through increasing highway safety!

Also, I've uploaded with this a picture of me with the bee after reading to New High Shoals Elementary School, with many local community leaders present including Mike Smith (staff from the Governor's Office of Highway Safety), Dr. Jackson (then-superintendent of Oconee schools), Ed Carson (coroner and highway safety advocate), Chuck Horton (county commissioner), and Scott Berry (Sheriff).
