Community Corner

Relay for Life

The annual Relay for Life event raises funds and awareness in the fight against cancer.

This year’s theme in Oconee County is Fighting Cancer Coast to Coast.  Each of the 45 teams that are registered for the event have chosen a city and will be dressing the part and decorating their campsites to reflect the city they have chosen.

The event kicks off at 5 p.m. Friday night at .  This is a great event to bring the family where there will be live music, great food and entertainment for those of all ages.  It will be a huge celebration.  Even if you are not part of a team that is walking the track, it is a great community event to be a part of.

However, it will also be a time of remembrance for those who have lost their battle with cancer or are currently waging a fight.  As the sun sets over campsites and darkness falls, the night is brightened by the glow of illuminated bags called luminaria, each bearing the name of someone who has battled cancer. Some celebrate cancer survivors, while others help us honor and remember those gone too soon. All represent someone special who has been profoundly affected by cancer and the family and friends who continue to fight back in their honor.

The event continues throughout the night, culminating with a final lap  at 6 a.m. on Saturday.
