Some Locals Report Feeling Earthquake

A 5.9 magnitude earthquake, centered in Virginia, struck at 1:51 p.m Tuesday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Tuesday afternoon's 5.9 magnitude earthquake which shook Virginia, Washington, DC, New York City and North Carolina may have caused the ground to shake here in the Oconee County area-- hundreds of miles away.

Here are some Twitter tweets from people who claim to have felt tremors from the quake:

On Facebook, Oconee Patch design columnist Melissa Steele said she felt something.

"I swear we just had an earthquake tremble here," Steele wrote. "I was sitting on the sofa writing (for Patch) on my laptop and it suddenly felt like it feels when you are on the second floor of the mall. Then I looked at the lamp beside the sofa and the little pull chain thingies were moving! It was weird."

But others reported not feeling anything at all.

" I didn't here on UGA Campus... Some say they did..." Stephanie Tucker noted.
