Regional Roundup: Mother Charged With Stabbing Newborn to Death, Man Killed When Struck by Train, and Lingerie Football Team to Be Called 'Atlanta Steam'

Thursday night, a 21-year-old Athens woman was charged with murder after police responded to a call and found her newborn son stabbed to death.

According to a story in the Athens Banner Herald, Cassandra Elyse Norwood gave birth to the little boy in a Waverly Woods house where she lived with her parents and other family members. She apparently gave birth by herself.

Someone found the dead baby around 1pm Thursday and called police, the story says.

Norwood was treated at Athens Regional Medical Center for blood loss and was under guard while she was there. She was booked into the Clarke County Jail Friday.

Gwinnett Lingerie Football Team: Call It 'Atlanta Steam' – Suwanee Patch

That Lingerie Football League team that plans to play in Gwinnett in 2013? Just call it the Atlanta Steam.

In a news release, LFL officials announced that "Atlanta Steam" was the most popular choice of almost 4,300 team name submissions. That was among the strongest responses for such an effort in an expansion market.

It's an appropriate team name for the LFL, which is not shy about its marketing appeal. Other team names include "Sin" and "Temptation."

– Cartersville Patch

A man was struck and killed by a train in downtown Cartersville shortly before 10 p.m. on Nov. 1. Capt. Mark Camp of the Cartersville Police Department released this statement:

"A short time ago a male subject was hit by a train on the railroad tracks in downtown Cartersville near Museum Drive and West Main Street. From the information I have been given the subject is deceased.”

Woman Killed When Car Strikes Tree – Woodstock Patch

Speed and alcohol may have been a contributing factor in an accident that took the life of a Woodstock woman late Wednesday night. 

Lydia Bordacs, 57, of Woodstock, died from injuries she suffered after her SUV crashed head-on into a tree along South Cherokee Lane near Jamerson Road at the Cobb/Cherokee line.

Bordacs, who was behind the wheel, hit a tree shortly before 10:20 p.m. and landed near the woods along the road. Her son Peter Kubanyi, 33, was a passenger in the vehicle and was not seriously injured in the accident.
