Free blood pressure checks for seniors and the Leonids meteor shower are a few of the things to know about in and around Oconee today.

Weather: Cooler temperatures are expected today.  Highs will be in the upper 50s.  Early morning clouds transition to sunny skies later in the day, according to the National Weather Service.

Top things to know:

  • The Oconee County Utility Department holds .  The hearing starts at 10 a.m. in the office of Chris Thomas, director of utilities, located at 1291 Greensboro Highway.   It is open to the public.
  • GA Cares will provide an informational program on Medicare D at the around 10:30 a.m. There will also be free blood pressure checks for seniors.
  • A centered on long term care takes place at 6 p.m. at 1361 Jennings Mill Road in Bogart.
  • Catch of glimpse of the Leonids meteor shower. Come to the UGA Observatory at 7 p.m. for an evening of stargazing.  Mostly clear skies are expected, but if there are clouds, there will be a talk in the main lecture hall. All are welcome and the event is free.
