It's American Education Week.

Weather: Partly sunny skies and highs in the low to mid 70s are expected today. Showers and thunderstorms are possible after 1 p.m.

Top things to know:

  • The Oconee County Chamber of Commerce is holding a ribbon cutting for one of its newest members, High Performing Systems, at 10 a.m.Β  The business is located at 7553 Macon Highway.
  • The University of Georgia and Georgia Tech go head to head in a friendly competition in a blood drive challenge.Β  In Athens, it takes place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m at UGA's Memorial Hall.
  • It's the 90th annual American Education Week. According to the National Education Association, the week "honors students' hard work to learn, recognizes the professionalism and dedication of teachers, support staff and other educators, thanks parents and members of the community who help students succeed, and rededicates the community at large to quality public education for every student." At Monday's meeting of the Oconee County Board of Education, Superintendent John Jackson read a proclamation after hearing a presentation from Oconee County High School English teacher Karen Solheim about the week's history. Β
