Oconee County Sheriff's Office Investigates Report of Child Molestation

Oconee County Sheriff Scott Berry said Thursday that an investigator has been assigned to a case involving child molestation that reportedly occurred more than a decade ago.

A woman on July 17 came to the Sheriff's Office and told deputies that she had been abused by a family member at an Oconee County home back in 1999.

The victim said she was around 13 years old at the time and that the molestation lasted for a period of around three years, according to Berry.

After recently being contacted on a social media website by her alleged abuser, the woman reached out to law enforcement, Berry said. But because of the time that has passed, Berry explained that the case poses challenges.

"It's very difficult to work," he said. "Physical evidence is impossible to come by, but we've got it assigned and will see where the evidence takes us."
