Oconee County 9/11 Ceremony Set

A ceremony marking the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks to be held at Oconee County Veterans Park.

Oconee County will hold a special ceremony of remembrance on the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the Community Center at, starting at 4 p.m. on Sept. 11.

that was recovered at ground-zero after the twin towers of the World Trade Center collapsed will be on display at the community center. 

Local citizens, members of the armed forces, representatives of local fire and law enforcement agencies, and government officials are invited to take part in the service.

Watkinsville, Ga.– Oconee County will join the rest of the nation in remembering the events of 10 years ago. Locally, a ceremony of remembrance will take place at 4:00 p.m. Sept. 11, on the 10-year anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
A 6-foot-long steel beam pulled from the rubble of the World Trade Center will be at the center of the remembrance ceremony at Oconee Veterans Park in front of the Community Center. Wreaths will be placed on the beam during the observance. In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be conducted inside the community center gymnasium.
The remembrance will bring together citizens, first responders and members of the armed forces. Taking part will be members of the Oconee County government, law enforcement and emergency officials along with representatives from Watkinsville’s Police Department. A military contingent from the Winder’s 1st Battalion 121st Infantry (48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team) will take part.
The event will include the Oconee Fire Department Honor Guard, bagpipers, speaker MG Maria Britt, Commander, Georgia Army National Guard and a remembrance ceremony centered on the newly received World Trade Center Artifact. MG Britt will speak about the effects of 9/11 on Georgia's citizen Soldiers and families and the effects of 9/11 in the Army National Guard’s Defense Support to Civil Authorities. Chairman Melvin Davis will host the event and make remarks throughout.
