News Nearby: 3 Lanes of Hwy 78 Should be Open for Evening Rush Hour

Officials on site said the plan is to open three lanes of Highway 78, two eastbound and one westbound, in time for afternoon traffic.

has been shut down since this morning as crews worked to fix damage caused by an overnight water main break. However, officials hope to have at least some of the lanes open in time for the afternoon traffic rush hour.

A spokesperson on the scene said the plan was to have the Georgia Department of Transportation put up barricades around the two large holes in the road by 2 p.m. so three lanes could be open in time for the afternoon rush hour traffic. Two of the lanes would head eastbound and one westbound for the afternoon traffic and if required, the route would be reversed in the morning.

In the meantime, traffic was diverted from Midway, to Brushy Fork and onto Rosebud Road to avoid the heavy construction zone.

According to an updated press release from Gwinnett County Fire & Emergency Services, the Department of Water Resoruces is currently working to make repairs to the broken water main. About 20 homes in the nearby mobile home park community of Gwinnett Estates had to be evacuated overnight due to flooding and water was shut off and would likely remain closed for most of the day. DWR was able to valve-off the area and stop the flow of water at about 6:15 a.m. and the water had receded enough for those evacuated from the MHP to return to their homes by about 7 a.m.

DWR reports that water service to part of the immediate area will be interrupted for most of the day. Once the break is repaired, crews will complete repairs to the roadway.

Additional information concerning the water main break, repairs, and damage to the roadway will be released by DWR and DOT officials as it becomes available.
