Heat Advisory - 102 Degrees Expected

Oconee and Clarke counties are among those included in the National Weather Service's advisory.

The heat wave continues with temperatures predicted to reach 102 degrees in Watkinsville and 101 degrees in Athens Wednesday. A heat advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service in Peachtree City to remain in force until 8 p.m. Thursday.

Heat indices are expected to reach up to 106 Wednesday and 108 Thursday. Although oppressive conditions will be felt all day, the most extreme heat will occur during the afternoon and evening hours. Prolonged exposure to this heat can be dangerous if the proper precautions are not taken.

A heat advisory means that a period of dangerous heat is expected. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will create heat index readings of a least 105 degrees and very warm overnight temperatures. The Weather Service offers the following advice:

  1. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room and stay out of direct sunshine.
  2. Remember the elderly, very young and people with heart conditions are most at risk in extreme heat. Friends, relatives and neighbors should check on people who may be at risk.
  3. Never leave any persons, especially infants or young children or animals, in a closed parked vehicle.
  4. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
  5. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
  6. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.
  7. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.
  8. Heat stroke is an emergency – call 911.
