“These devices, which allow readers to enjoy books in digital format, either to read or listen to, are a growing part of how people read books,” said Oconee County Library Manager Jackie Elsner in a released statement. “We want library patrons to have the opportunity to try out the digital reading experience, even if their circumstances do not allow them to own a device. We are so appreciative of the Rotary Club of Oconee County for helping us make these devices available.”

To check out a Kindle or mp3 player, patrons will be required to sign an agreement at checkout and present both their PINES card and a photo ID. The devices will have a nonrenewable checkout period of 21 days, and they must be returned fully charged to the circulation desk at the original library.

Overdue fines will be assessed at $5.00 per day, and there will be other fines for failure to return the devices with all the associated accessories in good working order.

The Oconee County Library checked out the first Kindle Tuesday, according to Rhiannon B. Eades, Public Relations Specialist for the Athens Regional Library System.

Both libraries already participate in the Georgia Download Destination, a consortium of Georgia public libraries that offer downloadable eBooks and audiobooks for checkout. In fact, during the first quarter of Fiscal Year 2013, online circulation of eBooks and audiobooks from Oconee County Libraries’ online portal is up 30% over the same time period last year, said Elsner in the news release.
