Bites Nearby: Fresh Air Bar-B-Que

Each week we'll tell you about a nearby restaurant that serves up delicious food and focuses on eating local.

has fed generations of Georgians, starting with the good citizens of Jackson, Ga., in 1929. Oconee County barbecue lovers are fortunate that Fresh Air decided to export its tried and true recipes to other parts of the state.

The Bogart location, which opened in 1998, upholds the tradition of excellence set by the mother ship in Jackson, which was named the “South’s Best BBQ Restaurant” by Southern Magazine in 1988.

At Fresh Air, the pork is slow-cooked with hickory and oak woods, the same as it has been in Jackson for over 70 years. The secret is in the sauce and Fresh Air’s universally loved vinegar ketchup sauce is available in mild and hot editions.

The secret is also in the Brunswick stew, which was developed in the 1940s. The perfect balance of ingredients and consistency of texture make this the stew of legends. Make yourself happy and order a chopped pork sandwich or make yourself even happier and order a chopped pork plate, which includes Brunswick stew, coleslaw or chips and white bread. The slaw at Fresh Air was designed to accompany their ‘cue, so it would be a shame to miss out on the culinary combination.

Large pork, chopped chicken and large chicken sandwiches are also available as well as chicken and rib plates.

If you are serious about your barbecue, you can take it home by the pound and buy Fresh Air’s sauce, Brunswick stew, baked beans and coleslaw by the gallon. If you need more convincing, the Bogart location has a “Testimonials” section on its website.
