I'm sure many of you remember the Athens, GA Half Marathon last October. Streets were blocked, crazy people were running way too many miles way too early in the morning for seemingly no reason, and there were a TON of people complaining about the "hill." Admittedly, I was one of those crazy people. But after I finished being crazy, I joined my staff and the rest of the Rivers Alive committee to check in and organize almost 400 volunteers. These volunteers were giving up their weekend afternoon to get down and dirty in our rivers, creeks and tributaries, as well as in areas that will one day lead to waterways to clean out trash and recyclable items.
In about 3 hours, 369 volunteers picked up 276 tires, 10,040 lbs of trash, and 8,000 lbs of glass and plastic recycling! I didn't think I'd ever find something so gross and so amazing all at the same time.
Unfortunately, tires have returned and citizens have been irresponsibly dumping their trash and recycling where fish and other animals are trying to live. So now it's your turn to be a part of those staggering statistics!
Register on http://handsonnega.org/special-events to work at one of our project sites. The actual event is on October 15th. Volunteers will check in at Dudley Park between 8am and 9am - we promise to have juice and coffee! (This isn't confirmed yet, but I also heard rumors of biscuits and jam ... YUM!) Then folks will travel out to their project sites from 9am-12pm and then return to Dudley Park at noon for some pizza, entertainment (live band!), prizes and games! Prizes go out to the Best Trash to Treasure find, Most Unique Find, and the Most Reusable Find.
Hope to see you there! Let me know if you have any questions! All ages are welcome - kid-friendly sites are available as well. :)
