Chigger season approaches!

Chiggers are coming! How big an infestation to expect this year?

Here on the Georgia Piedmont, Chiggers begin to show up around the middle of June. That's just around the corner! Will this be a "bad chigger season?" If the abundance of ticks is any indication -- look out!

Chiggers are the larval stages of big red mites that you may see crawling on the ground this time of year. The adults don't bite - they eat small insects, including termites, so they aren't bad guys. Chiggers would prefer a snake or a lizard or a bird to you.

In the photo I'm using little squares of black plastic to find chiggers. See my blog at www.daccrossley.typepad.com for more information.

And I'd like to know the date that chiggers first appear in your area. Where did you get them? When?
