The Athens Area Humane Society Needs YOUR Help with Cat Adoptions!

This week started off with several cat adoptions at the Athens Area Humane Society for our Name Your Price cat adoption promotion, where you choose your own adoption fee. But we are seeing the most pressing need thus far this year to adopt more cats now!

Yesterday evening, we pulled nine kittens and this morning we pulled three adult cats from Oconee County Animal Control that were about to be euthanized if we didn’t go save them. The animal control shelters in our area are seeing too many cat surrenders, and they are simply running out of room to house healthy, adoptable cats because of the litters of kittens brought in due to kitten season. We were able to save 22 cats from euthanasia in the past day, but we still need to do more. Oconee County Animal Control still has 30 kittens, we have 19 and there are just as many at Clarke County and other animal controls in our area. We need to adopt out our cats and kittens to good homes so we can pull more cats from animal control and give them all a second chance.

On top of what we’re hearing from animal control agencies about the number of cats they are taking in, we’re receiving daily calls about kittens at AAHS. We received so many calls yesterday from people who have found kittens that they need to surrender that if we would have taken in all of the cats, we would have had over 20 additional cats in just one day!

Because we need to get these cats adopted quickly, we’ve extended our Name Your Price promotion to ALL kittens and cats!

We’re also opening our Zeus House Shelter (1781 Mars Hill Rd., Watkinsville, GA 30677) from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm Monday through Friday through the end of June for people to come meet our adoptable kittens and cats at both of our locations.

How YOU Can Help:

·         Spay or Neuter Your Pets! Help prevent this problem in the first place by making sure your pets are fixed. You can also fix stray animals for a low cost at our Spay & Neuter Center, and we do offer feral cat packages for only $35 if you bring them in a humane trap. Please call 706-705-2247 to rent a humane trap.

·         Adopt a Cat! If you have room in your home for another cat, please find it in your heart to adopt a cat right now and give others a second chance.

·         Share Our Adoptable Cats on Social Media. If you can’t adopt, please share our adoptables on your social media pages and help them get more exposure to find them homes.

·         Donate to AAHS to Help us Care for Cats Waiting to be Adopted: You can donate at www.AthensHumaneSociety.org/YouCanHelp to help us pay for the cost of caring for the adoptable animals we’re saving. You can also sponsor cats at our Adoption Center.

·         Foster Found Cats: Consider fostering the litters of kittens you find and try to find homes for them on your own to reduce the number of kittens entering shelters.

Our Adoption Center  is located in the back of Pet Supplies Plus (191 Alps Rd., Athens, GA 30607) and is open Monday through Friday from 1:00pm to 7:00pm (closed Wednesdays) and Saturday through Sunday from 12:00pm to 6:00pm. You can also make an appointment to visit our cats at the Zeus House Shelter by calling 706-705-2247.
