Threat of Inclement Weather on Labor Day Cancels Ashford Manor's Final 'Concert on the Lawn'

The last concert, which was to feature The Sensational Sounds of Motown, will not be rescheduled.

The following is a news release from :

The farewell performance…

To all our loyal supporters, those planning to help celebrate our last “Concert on the Lawn”, and those coming for the first time to experience what everyone has been talking about for the last 12 years, we thank you all and regret to say that we have cancelled tonight’s final Ashford Concert, featuring The Sensational Sounds of Motown.

. We had not planned for the bang to be a clap of thunder.

The U.S. weather service tells us to expect, many claps of thunder, lightning and a projected inch of rain. Thunder, and especially rain and lighting, do not mix well with thousands of amps of electricity needed to put on the show. And not to mention potentially billions of amps of power in predicted lightning.
Normally a great ‘morning after’ newspaper headline: ASHFORD MANOR’S LAST CONCERT ELECTRIFIED THE CROWD, demonstrates the difficult dichotomy between the great joy, fun, amazing music and community spirit with the serious responsibility that has always guided our decision process when
Nature threatened the safety of sometimes as many as 1000 concert-goers.

With over 140 concerts over the years, truly a small fraction have been cancelled and re-scheduled. Tens of thousands of friends, neighbors and strangers have enjoyed an amazing array of very talented musicians and performers in a safe, family-friendly environment, (with help from Chief O’Dillion and his staff) guiding families at an accessible hour of the evening for families, kids and those of us too old for late-night music venues. When Nature cooperated we hope you all gained fond memories of these truly
magical evenings in little ol’ Watkinsville.

We would like you to thank our amazing friends at Athens First Bank and Trust, a division of SYNOVUS’ BANK, our major sponsor for so many years. They are the main reason so many of you heard about this series. Without their unending, tremendous support over the years we would not have been able
to maintain the level of quality, safety and fun up to our very last concert. Much credit is also due this year’s sponsors American Pest Control, Mirko’s, Fox’s Pizza, BARBERITOS, Davenport Chiropractic, Kent Chapman, CPA, Southern Distinction Magazine and hundreds of sponsors in past years.

We, and many of you all, also benefited from the kindness of our neighbors, especially Ashford Memorial Methodist Church and other local businesses who graciously allowed parking on concert nights—FOR FREE.

It is with great sadness that we end this chapter of what was a tremendous community event and truly a passion and a blast for us to host. We will miss you all.

We promise to keep Ashford Manor, and now, Ashford On Main, vital parts to the community and Oconee County. We still have many public events scheduled and plans for more and different events in the future. We remain available for private events of all sizes and types.

We have always considered Ashford Manor to belong as much to the community as it does to us. Do not be strangers. Help us keep Oconee County a great place to live and work, and Watkinsville, in particular, a ‘world-class small town’.

Thank you, and see you soon.
Dave, Mario, Miss Louise and Schroder.
