Here is our pick of activities going on in or around Oconee County this weekend.

Where/When: Downtown on Friday from 6 to 9 p.m.

Why Go: To kick-off Labor Day weekend in a family-friendly atmosphere with shopping, food and activities for one and all.

Where/When: on Saturday at 8 a.m. for the 5K Run/Walk and 9:30 a.m. for the Lap of Love Fun Run

Why Go: To devote your Saturday morning to fun and exercise with friends and family while supporting the work of Butterfly Dreams Farm, which works with children with special needs.

Pricing: 5K: $20 for individual; $50 for family of 5 or under; Fun Run: $10

Where/When: Various venues around downtown Decatur Square on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Why Go: To participate in the largest independent book festival in the country featuring a book fair along with readings, talks and panel discussions with more than 300 authors from around the country.

Pricing: Free

Where/When: on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Why Go: To stroll through the two pottery exhibitions at with Michael Pitts, a well-known Georgia potter, and expand your pottery proficiency.

Pricing: Free

5.

Where/When: on Monday. Gates open at 5 p.m. Eddie and the Public Speakers play at 6 p.m. and the Half Dozen Brass Band takes to the stage at 7 p.m.

Why Go: To hear the Half Dozen Brass Band play its own unique blend of jazz, hip-hop, funk and Dixieland that pays tribute to the celebratory music that thrives in the streets of the Big Easy.

Pricing: $15 adults; $12 students (with ID); $5 children under 12; free children under 6
