Did You Know THIS About Your Neighbor?

10 things I bet you did not know about your neighbor, Dan Matthews.

made headlines this year when he twice.He has published more than a 1,000 photos on the "Spotted" photoblog for the Athens Banner-Herald and has authored hundreds of freelance articles and columns in various newspapers in the area since 1981 including the "About Oconee" for Oconee Patch, but did you know this about your Watkinsville neighbor?

TOP 10 THINGS YOU MAY NOT ALREADY KNOW ABOUT YOUR NEIGHBOR, DAN MATTHEWS.

1) Dan was an extra in the film "Remember the Titans." He stood next to Denzel Washington in a scene that you can see best in the widescreen version of the DVD - Chapter 14!

2.) Dan was also an extra in a couple of TV series: "Breaking Away" and "Somebodies" - both filmed in Athens.

3.) His mother helped to move the Iowa Caucuses to the forefront of the political process in 1972. She had Jimmy Carter and many other political candidates come to their house when Dan was a small child.

4.) Dan's father wrote a story about the in The Red and Black newspaper when he attended UGA from 1949-52 and Dan worked in Eagle Tavern when it was still the Oconee County Welcome Center.

5.) Dan also worked at as the Gym Supervisor from 1989-94.

6.) Dan hosted a game show and talk show on the radio in the Athens area and he has been on alumni shifts on 90.5 FM WUOG for more than a decade.

7.) Dan tried out for Jeopardy and passed the test the week his son was born.

8.) Dan volunteered for the Historic Sites and Tourism Committee for two terms.

9.) His grandmother, Antoinette Johnson Matthews, started the first private nursery school in Georgia in Druid Hills in the 1930s.

10.) Dan has volunteered as a coach in many sports around Oconee with his son for most of the last decade.
