Every parent asks of their children, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" In school, the kids make posters of themselves as firemen and veterinarians and astronauts. Kids play dress up and act out their dreams.
I have always talked to my kids about college as an absolute. First you go to grade school. Then you go to middle school and before long, it's on to high school. For our family, it is not if you choose to go to college, but when you go to college.
I understand that not every child is cut out for college, but I intend for my two to go. I may be naive in thinking that I can raise them to follow this path, but I am doing my heartfelt best. Both of my parents went to college. All of my aunts and uncles went to college. My aunt, stricken with cerebral palsy, went to college and achieved her master's degree.

Recently I took my kids to visit Duke University, as my son thinks that he'd like to earn his undergraduate degree at the University of Georgia and then move on to Duke for a master's degree, following in his uncle's footsteps. Lots of my friends told me that I was starting this search too soon.
Considering the economy of today, does it matter if you have a degree? What do you think?
