Plans for 'Killed in Action' Memorial Garden and Wall of Honor Unveiled

A crowd of patriots braved the cold and wind on March 2 in a show of support for the Oconee Veterans Memorial, which has been restored to its original glory.

The memorial underwent repairs last year after it sustained damage resulting  from a lightning strike.  The Oconee Veterans Memorial Foundation planned a re-dedcation ceremony complete with music from the Yargo Community Concert Band and testimonials from the Board of Directors.

"This memorial is a remembrance of all men and women from every branch of our military who stood for liberty, some paying the ultimate sacrifice for that liberty," said Lt. Col. John Gentry, director of Oconee County Parks and Recreation.

The event also served to launch a capital campaign with the goal of raising an immediate $35,000 to pay for the repairs and $175,000 to fund ongoing preservation and growth. Gentry later reported via the organization's Facebook Page that $11,000 was raised on Saturday.

"Tremendous support by the Oconee County community!" he wrote.

Those in attendance were treated to a tasty lunch from Stripling's General Store and other sponsors and also got a first look at plans for the 'Killed in Action' Memorial Garden and Wall of Honor (see related video).
