According to Sunglasses International, the first invention resembling what we know today as sunglasses appeared in 12th century China — but they weren't used to protect the eyes. The lenses were made of smoky quartz and were used in courts to shield the expressions of judges when questioning witnesses. Similar glasses were made in Italy in the 1400s and were also primarily used in court cases.

Sunglasses used as we know them today — to shield eyes from the sun's rays — came about in 1929, when American entrepreneur Sam Foster began mass producing cheap sunglasses and selling them on the beaches of Atlantic City, N.J.
