It happens once in about every four years -- an extra day is added to the calendar.

Weather: Another round of showers and thunderstorms is headed toward the area, according to the National Weather Service.  Mainly cloudy skies and high temperatures in the mid 70s are in the forecast.

Top things to know:

  • Wonder why Leap Years are needed? According to timeanddate.com, adding the extra day about every four years keeps our calendar in alignment with the Earth's revolutions around the sun. Learn more.
  • Extended Janitorial Services will be at the Athens Career Center from 1-4 p.m. to hold interviews for open janitorial positions in the area.See more.
  • Meet staff from the Oconee County Library at the Leap Into a Year of Reading Percentage Night at Fox's Pizza Den.  From 5:30-8:30 p.m, stop by the booth at the Epps Bridge Location.  Food purchased at either location or online will count toward the percentage donated to the libary, according to the library's Facebook page.
  • is hosting a screening of the documentary A suggested donation of $10 will go to benefit Project Safe.
  • Members of the will teach a Leap Day Dance Workshop at UGA's Tate Center from 7-8:30 p.m. Beginners to experienced dancers are welcome.
