Oconee May See Snow Tonight, Early Thursday

Local agencies are eyeing a winter weather advisory for North Georgia that forecasts a mix of rain and snow overnight.

UPDATE: Less than half an inch of snow fell overnight in Oconee County, and school officials have made the decision to delay the day by 2 hours.  Students that ride buses should be ready and waiting for their bus 2 hours after the normal pick-up time, according to a statement on the school system's website.

Oconee County government is also running on a 2-hour delayed schedule and all offices will open at 10 a.m., Emergency Management Deputy Director Mark Melvin said.

Athens Academy's website says the school will open at 10 a.m.

Westminster Academy is starting on time, according to the school's website.

There is another chance of snowfall in Oconee County.  The National Weather Service of Peachtree City is tracking precipitation that is anticipated to begin sometime after 7 p.m.   Rain may turn into snow, but less than an inch is expected to accumulate in the area, according to forecasts.

A winter weather advisory warns that roads may be slippery at times, and drivers should use caution.

Chief Deputy Lee Weems said is keeping a close eye on the roads and will respond accordingly. 

In the event of winter weather, Oconee Administrative Officer Alan Theriault said the , , and public works director will be out and about between 4:30 a.m. and 5 a.m.  Deputies and the fire department will also be checking the roads, and there will be trucks ready to go with sand and salt if needed, he said.   Officials will make the determination if there will be any closings by 5:30 a.m. Thursday, Theriault added.

High temperatures in the mid to upper 40s on Thursday should melt any ice, according to the weather service.
