New 'Buckle Up' Sign at OCHS Encourages Seat Belt Use

"Statistics show up that motor vehicle accidents are the number one killer of our teenagers," Oconee County Coroner says.

A new sign was installed outside of Oconee County High School last week that is designed to encourage seat belt use.

Oconee County Coroner Ed Carson said about a year ago he read a newspaper article about a similar sign being posted on the campus of a high school in Gainesville.

"I decided that this project was something that had to be done in Oconee County," Carson wrote in an email to Oconee Patch.  "I shared the idea. A sign went up at North Oconee. About 3 months ago I went to work to get signs at Oconee County High School."

Carson thanked Stripling's General Store, National EMS, Walmart, Walton EMC and Lord & Stephens Funeral Home for sponsoring the project.

Plans to add another sign at North Oconee are already in the works, he said.
