Flag of Honor Added to Oconee County Memorial on 9/11 Anniversary

Adjacent to a piece of steel beam salvaged from the World Trade Center forever memorialized inside of the Oconee Veterans Park Community Center now hangs the names of the victims who died twelve years ago on September 11.

It reads: "This flag is created from the names of those who perished in the terrorist attacks of 9/11/Now and forever it represents their immortality/We shall never forget them."

The Flag of Honor was presented on Wednesday by the local chapter of Woodmen of the World.

Mitch Mullis, a field representative of the fraternal benefit society, said Woodmen of the World is one of the largest presenters of flags in the United States.  Over 138,000 were given to non-profits or schools in the last year alone, he said.

"This is just one of the giving back to the community things we do," he remarked.
