The 14th Annual Greek Festival brings a taste of international cuisine to Oconee County.

A Taste of Greece is coming to Oconee County on September 24 and 25 at the at .

Attendees can feast on traditional Greek entrees, a la carte dishes and pastries. Lamb, a staple of the Greek diet, can be ordered on a plate with green beans, rice or Greek potatoes, salad and rolls or a la carte in a gyro wrapped in pita bread with tzatziki sauce. Cool and creamy, tzatziki sauce is a cucumber yogurt dip flavored with garlic.

The centerpiece of the veggie plate is spanakopeta, a popular Greek spinach pie made with layers of phyllo dough and a filling of seasoned spinach, onions and feta. It is served with dolmathes, Greek leaves stuffed with rice and other seasonings; green beans; Greek potatoes and rolls. The Greek method of roasting potatoes with olive oil, garlic and lemon takes a plain spud and makes it sing.

Top off your meal at St. Philothea’s with one or two or more Greek pastries and sweets, made with an abundance of honey, nuts, fruits, and creams. Try Baklava, a longtime favorite Greek pastry made with layers of buttered phyllo, ground walnuts, sugar and cinnamon and topped with honey syrup. Or try the Ouzo cupcakes, new to the festival this year, made Ouzo flavored cake batter with honey syrup.

A world of other confections awaits you, from Koulourakia, braided butter cookies to the Athenian cake, a nutty, sugary and moist cake. Stop by the Greek Festival at St. Philothea for a bite and savor the flavor of the Mediterranean without leaving home.
