ATHENS, Ga. – More than 2,000 middle and high school students from around the state will convene at The Classic Center this month for the Georgia Music Educators Association’s 2014 All State Chorus and All State Band and Orchestra rehearsals and performances.
The 1,300 students performing for All State Chorus on Feb. 20-22 were narrowed down from a group of 6,000 students throughout the state who tried out during two auditions held this past fall and winter.
From Feb. 27-March 1, more than 700 students will be at The Classic Center for All State Band and Orchestra. This group of students was narrowed down from 10,000 who auditioned earlier.
This is the first year the Georgia Music Educators Association has held events at The Classic Center. The group is scheduled to return to Athens through 2017.
“We are pleased to be in Athens for our all state events!” said Cecil Wilder, executive director of Georgia Music Educators Association. “The Classic Center is a world-class facility and their staff is great to work with. We look forward to hosting events here for many years.”
The economic impact for both groups on the local economy is expected to be $2 million, according to the Athens Convention and Visitors Bureau.
GMEA is one of the many groups that have been able to come to Athens because of The Classic Center expansion.
The Georgia Music Educators Association stages all-state events ranging from elementary school to college and university. These include six all state bands, three all state orchestras, six all state choruses, a high school all state jazz ensemble, and a high school all state sight reading chorus.
