Keep Oconee County Beautiful Commission wins National Award from KAB

KOCBC Press Release:

Watkinsville, Georgia ~ December 27, 2013 - The Keep Oconee County Beautiful Commission announced today that it has been named the First Place Affiliate of Keep America Beautiful in the population category of 50,000 or less.

Keep America Beautiful (KAB) is “the nation’s leading nonprofit that builds vibrant communities.  They “bring people together to unlock every community’s potential.”

The Keep Oconee County Beautiful Commission (KOCBC) is the local Oconee County affiliate of KAB.  KOCBC’s mission is to “increase citizen awareness of the need for individual environmental stewardship and to offer opportunities for public involvement in local projects.”

The Keep Oconee County Beautiful Commission has worked really hard in the last year to fulfill all the requirements of KAB and to bring a more innovative approach to educating citizens on the important issues of litter abatement, waste reduction, recycling and everything else related to a healthier environment and making Oconee County a beautiful place to live.

According to Executive Director Angela Helwig, “the members of the Keep Oconee County Beautiful Commission certainly deserve this award.  They are passionate and dedicated individuals who believe in the KOCBC mission and do everything they can to fulfill it.  Oconee County is so lucky to have this great group of people!   They are full of enthusiasm, creativity and energy.  Working side by side with our community volunteers, they have no problem getting things done and getting their hands dirty, if necessary, unloading Christmas trees, planting, weeding, picking up litter along roadsides and riverbanks, and anything else that is required.”

Executive Director Angela Helwig and KOCBC member Rebecca Billings will accept the award during the special Awards Ceremony Dinner, at the Keep America Beautiful National Conference in Charlotte, NC on February 4, 2014.  This ceremony “will recognize and celebrate the work of affiliates, volunteers and partners for their commitment to delivering more beautiful and vibrant communities.”
