The mission of the Keep Oconee County Beautiful Commission (KOCBC), Oconee’s local affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, is to increase citizen awareness of the need for individual environmental stewardship and to offer opportunities for public involvement in local projects.

This year, KOCBC is asking all Oconee County citizens to help us make Oconee County litter free by participating in our largest local project.

We encourage all business leaders, community groups, civic leaders and citizens to join our efforts by participating in the “GREAT AMERICAN CLEANUP in OCONEE.”  The Great American Cleanup is a major program of Keep America Beautiful and is the nation's largest community improvement program, involving an estimated 3 million volunteers and attendees annually.

KOCBC participates each year by holding a large cleanup event allowing us to get Oconee citizens involved in the important work of picking up litter and making Oconee County as litter free as possible.  This work is so important because it has been proven that the more littered the roadsides are, the more likely litterers are to add to the litter.  Sadly, if it looks like a dumpsite, they think it must be one.

Saturday, May 10th – Great American Cleanup in Oconee – Litter Cleanup Event

KOCBC urges Oconee citizens to join in this mighty effort to eliminate all the litter in Oconee County.  We will meet at 9 am in the parking lot of the Oconee County Library for a short kickoff celebration followed by litter pick-up assignments.

Making Oconee a litter-free county is a big job but, once done, we hope that our citizens will be so proud of how Oconee looks that they will want to keep it that way!

In addition to the May 10th event, we encourage Oconee citizens to hold their own Great American Cleanup projects (litter pick-ups, planting, recycling, etc.) anytime or to participate in KOCBC's Adopt a Mile and Adopt a Spot litter programs.

For more information, to sign up for a cleanup project or to report your cleanup efforts, please contact GAC Committee Chair Melissa Steele by e-mail at gacoconee@gmail.com, or please call 706-769-5120.
