Great American Cleanup in Oconee Event a Great Success!

Litter Costs - all of us - more than $11 billion dollars is spent in the US each year to clean it up. The Great American Cleanup in Oconee is a KOCBC project aimed at eradicating litter.

Happy Earth Day Everyone!

The Keep Oconee County Beautiful Commission would like to thank everyone who worked to make Saturday’s big event for the Great American Cleanup in Oconee a great success!

Here are the results of Saturday’s event:

22.5 miles of Oconee County Streets and Roads were cleared of litter by 35 volunteers.

49 total bags of roadside litter were recovered including 472 lbs of non-recyclable trash, 187 lbs of recyclables, and 31 lbs of scrap metals, plastic, etc. The grand total was 690 lbs.

The total hours put in by volunteers for this single day of the Great American Cleanup in Oconee was 88.5.  That number only includes the people who picked up litter.  There were many more who help out at the staging area.

Last year on our April 21, 2012 date we had 89 volunteers who picked up 1930 lbs total of litter.  This year’s one day event was not as big as last year’s – probably because of the conflict with other events including proms at both high schools - but the numbers are still great and the people that worked put their hands and hearts into the effort.  Thank you all so much!

It may not have been as big this year but it was certainly a lot of fun.  We had a short kickoff ceremony with remarks by Oconee County Chairman Melvin Davis and Binny the Trash Can led us all in some stretching exercises to get everyone warmed up and ready to tackle the trash.

We also had a contest to see which group of 5 or more could recover the most litter including recyclables.

First place ($500) donated by Greensource=mc2 went to the North Oconee High School’s Go Green Club and Second place ($100) donated by Consider It Done went to Fox’s Pizza Den who will be donating their prize to the NOHS Go Green Club for a planting project.  Way to go Go Green!

Last but not least, we gave away some great door prizes – and actually ran out of contestants before we ran out of prizes.  Here is the list:

A $20 gift certificate to Piccolo’s – Jena Gregory

A $10 Jittery Joes gift card – Mark Saxon

A Fox’s Pizza Den Big Daddy Pizza – Aashal Dave

12 Benson’s Crème Cakes – Wayne Turnbull, Chuck Whitmire, Brandon Hubbard, Lauren Lucky, Mariam Hammadi, Dick Smith, Cody Mcenaney, Dan Matthews, Jackie Tripp

Congratulations!  If you see your name on the list and you haven’t yet collected your prize, please give KOCBC Director Angela Helwig a call (706-769-5120) to arrange to pick it up.

VERY IMPORTANT:  The Great American Cleanup in Oconee IS NOT OVER!  We still need volunteers to take part between now and the end of May.  If you are interested, please call 706-769-5120 or e-mail ahelwig@oconee.ga.us.

Thanks everyone!
