High School Football Kicks Off with Preseason Games

Oconee County High, North Oconee High and others open play with scrimmages games this weekend.

High school football in Georgia is not quite ready for prime time, but dress rehearsals are scheduled in and around the area this week.

Scrimmage football games, practice encounters in preparation of the official start of the season later this month, give coaches and players a chance to gauge their progress, and communities a test drive of the Friday night experience.

According a preseason schedule compiled by the Georgia High School Football Daily, here are five scrimmages games coming up involving teams from Athens and Oconee:

  • Oconee County at Cedar Shoals, Aug. 16: Cedar’s Darius Jordan (1,543 passing yards, 15 TDs last year) is the son of Clemson great Homer Jordan. Oconee County went 3-7 last year.
  • Clarke Central at North Oconee, Aug. 22:  Matchup of playoff teams from last year — Clarke in Class AAAAA, North Oconee in Class AAA.
  • Athens Academy at Jackson County, Friday Aug. 16: Athens Academy was a state quarterfinalist after a 10-0 regular season in 2012.
  • Athens Christian at Madison County, Aug. 23:  Athens Christian is hoping to build on last season’s playoff performance.
  • Prince Avenue Christian at King’s Ridge, Friday, Aug. 16:  Prince Avenue, with preseason Class A all-state linebacker Christian Payne, reached the state final last season.
