Here is our pick of activities going on in or around Oconee County this weekend.

 

1. CHOCOLATE FESTIVAL AND “CHOCOLAT” SCREENING 

Where/When: Cine in Athens on Friday at 7 p.m.           

Why Go: To attend the kick-off for Cine’s Summer Classic Movie Series featuring a screening of Chocolat followed by a Chocolate Festival with music, jugglers, a fortune teller, specialty drinks (cash bar) and boatloads of chocolate.

Pricing: $7

2. “ROCK OF AGES”

Where/When: Fox Theatre in Atlanta on Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. and Sunday at and 1:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.  

Why Go: To see Constantine Maroulis of American Idol fame as Drew in the First National Tour of the five-time Tony Award nominated smash-hit musical Rock of Ages.

Pricing: Tickets range from $30 to $80

 3. ATHENS DAWG DERBY

Where/When: Classic Center in Athens on Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Why Go: To attend the fifth running Double Dog Dare’s Athens Dawg Derby, a two-day flyball tournament featuring races that will include regular, multi-breed, veteran and open classes. 

Pricing: $2

 4. AN AFTERNOON WITH AUTHOR TERRY KAY

Where/When: Oconee County Library on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Why Go: To hear local, award-winning author, Terry Kay, discuss his latest novel, Bogmeadow’s Wish, and have the opportunity to have a copy autographed.

Pricing: Free

 5. MICHAEL BOUCHER BENEFIT BBQ

Where/When: Bogart Community Center on Saturday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Why Go: To raise money for wounded Marine Lance Cpl. Michael Boucher and break barbecue with family and friends.

Pricing: $8 per plate.
