Tree, Debris Cleanup Underway in Watkinsviille

Crews and residents are busy picking up after Thursday's thunderstorms.

Watkinsville workers and residents were busy Friday picking up tree limbs and debris that littered the city in the aftermath of severe thunderstorms.

There were no reported injuries and no structural damage, but limbs did fall onto properties, Watkinsville Police Chief Lee O'Dillon said.

"If you ride through town, you can see that a bad storm blew through," he said. "But we were lucky."

Downtown Watkinsville lost power for nearly three hours on Thursday evening, prompting officers and volunteer firefighters to step in and direct traffic at affected intersections.

An email from Mayor Joe Walter forwarded by Julie Sanders, city clerk, asks residents to separate leaves and limbs into different piles next to the curb for pickup. "Doing so will expedite the Street Department’s endeavors in getting the City back to pre-storm condition," the email stated.

The Street Department may be running behind the regular schedule as a result of the added amount of debris, the email said.
