So What Are You Going to Do if Your Guy Doesn't Win?
The debate on which presidential candidate to vote for has been decisive, so what is going to happen Nov. 6 or 7 when some people learn their candidate didn't win?
Come Tuesday at 7 p.m. it is all over bar the shouting. But just how loud is the shouting going to be?
The 2012 election season has been one of the most devisive on record according to most accounts. Even the discussion here on Patch has got heated on many occasions. Those who support President Barack Obama are solid in their support of him. The same goes for those who support the challenger, Mitt Romney. But at least one set of supporters is going to come away disappointed. The big question is, how is the country going to handle it? Usually there are threats by some that they will leave the country if their guy doesn't win. This year, however, there have even been threats of riots.
Will you accept the will of the people, settle down and give the president four more years if that is the outcome - even if you didn't vote for him? If it goes the other way and you didn't vote for Romney, will you accept that the country is not prepared to give Obama another four years and that a new president is about to take the reins?
What are you going to do if your guy doesn't win?

The most important thing for us to do, regardless of the winner, is to resolve some important issues for our political system and the way it operates.
First, even with an approval rating of only 10% most congressman and state representatives will be returned to office. Why? It is because the politicians choose the voters instead of the voters choosing the politicians, so we need some method of fairly drawing the districts and to eliminate gerrymandering. This will also encourage more people to run for office. Remember most of our state representatives have no competition because they are in protected districts.
The Citizens United decision has enabled the rich plutocrats and corporations to buy our elections with their ability to now contribute unlimited funding for those lawful robo calls, TV ads and even changes to our state constitution like amendment 1 .Look how much money Alice Walton and private corporations have put into getting this measure passed in Georgia.
Some other ideas are also limits on campaign time, public funding of campaigns, voting by the internet, etc.
The elimination of the monopoly of the two party systems would allow more competition. . A changing of ballot access rules to allow Libertarians, The Green party, Independents to easily get on the ballot would be a big step forward. These are just a few ideas but it is urgent that reform take place.

I don't think that Obama supporters are going to have to wonder what they are going to do in that scenario. And these figures haven't even yet taken into consideration just how disgusted American's have become with Romney, given that Sandy has put FEMA in the forefront of this race in this last week and Romney refuses to answer questions about it, because he knows that he is on record for saying that he would like to eliminate it.

Too bad those folks are depending on FEMA. Yes, if the states had the money, I think the help would be quicker and complete. Why do you people love big government so much? He'll probably have to so he can defend his chickenhawk big bully stance regarding Iran, ending up in another ME war. I would much rather those tax dollars go to help Americans get back on their feet than spill their blood in the desert sand. Unless you're in the millionaire income bracket, you're going to pay more taxes with R&R. You'll be paying taxes no matter who is POTUS, but more with Romney.

I wish people understood the whole FEMA issue. States send money to FEMA, FEMA holds captive said funds until a disaster comes along. The prez then HAS to declare that state a disaster area, so that FEMA can then give THAT state THEIR OWN MONIES BACK. Nothing special or sacrificial, just give them their funds back to deal with the crisis. If handled on a state level, state retaining their own funds only cuts out the waiting on there to be a deceleration of a disaster, and they get to work quicker in restoring their areas. Why wouldn't it work better that way being a state generally knows its residents, their needs, and neighborhoods better than some federal bureaucracy. THAT'S what Romney was talking about, NOT leaving a state and their people without any help.

Yes, Romney said it's immoral to use taxpayer money for FEMA! Aside from whether he's just talking big, what kind of heartless wannabe leader does that make him? (Insert the chorus to Kris Allen's cover of 'Heartless' but replace "woman" with greed. I don't think Mitt's a philanderer or a philanthropist ;) Whatcha gonna do when an entire state's system is wiped out because of a storm, earthquake, etc.? You're going to expect the patient to operate on himself? States
don't give up control under FEMA's assistance. I done tol' you, Mary Lou, states that have a constitutional requirement to "balance" their budget could spend that disaster money for other items and then who would they go to? - right, the Federal govt. They would be double dipping. Romney would do worse than turn over all disaster relief to the states, he would privatize it so profit is added to the cost. The contractors will make money under the FEMA system, but they'll pad it more if privatized. You make it sound like there's a big time lapse before an area is declared a disaster zone. It's pretty much immediate. Effects of disasters like Katrina and Sandy are not confined to the region hit. The whole country is affected! Plus, we're all going to see insurance premiums go up very soon, for homes, cars, medical, all insurance. Is there more than one Mary Lou? I think I'm replying to multiples.

Good grief- as I already done tol'you as well- I trust a state to handle their own monies, and again I ask- what stellar performance have the feds done? point to Katrina- delays and moldy health hazard trailers. You seem to have a mistrust for states to have more power which in turn, empowers the people. You seem to think that Washington is better suited for the people, I dont, as it stands right now. "could" spend disaster money to balance budgets- doesn't mean "will" spend money to balance budgets. I guess you just think big government all across the board, regardless of obvious and known failures, I dont. Compare privatized anything to Government anything, and I tend to think privatized seems to have a better track record than the Government. Just look right now whats going on- NON UNION WORKERS showed up to help that disaster area up north and UNION WORKERS declined their help and sent them away. Go figure. In 2008 (BUSH), it was expanded to include cell phones since there weren't so many of those in 1984 ;) If Bush and Rs didn't like the program they had 8 long damn years to stop it, not expand it. http://washingtonexaminer.com/obamas-truth-team-denounces-supporters-obama-phone-claim/article/2509305#.UJVAeW_BGSo

From the link above: " the government program is called Lifeline, originally created to subsidize land line phone service for low income Americans. Reagan raised them the first two years. Raising taxes is a part of fixing liberal spending, but the trick is, you've got to stop at some point (unlike obama who is STILL spending to the point of bankrupting our entire country). Reagan did. Trickle down economics was a phrase coined by liberals. Reagan did exactly what John F. Kennedy did. Several presidents that did what he did showed great success. Reagan said that his policies would not show up in full for about ten years - lo and behold, the 90's benefitted the greatest. All you RR folks, if they go in, say bye bye to your charity and mortgage interest tax deductions. Well, guess you probably won't miss the charity part. They're gonna get it to help offset cutting the 1%er taxes. Ronnie Iran Contra Raygun took away the non-mtge. loan and credit card interest deductions from the middle class in the '80s. They're just following in Big Daddy's footsteps. Here's a little report on the GOP claim that the 1% are the job creators with a big no-no to asking them to pay a little more: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/01/congressional-research-service_n_2059156.html?utm_hp_ref=mostpopular

You know, I'd take some of what you say seriously ggy if you actually had a conversation with us. I have posted questions (you have not answered other than being defensive and then attacking with name calling-Sandy called that one right). I doubt you watched any of the links I provided. In fact, I know you haven't because there is plenty to quote from that you could have given a thoughtful answer to. You, like your candidate, likes to stir the pot, but aren't actually cooking anything in the pot (good metaphor- lol). Scroll through? Yes - anything you post. I like talking to people who have a two way conversation like MaryLou and others. I'm here for that. OK. Start your name calling, it's expected. Not getting personal, just calling you out. You want people to stop that, then maybe listen to constructive criticism and learn from it. There's a difference. Notice I didn't use one ugly or condescending name. Try that.

Name calling? Not so. I do use some adjectives, but not name-calling. You like to have conversations with people who agree with you, and you don't like it when you're refuted. That's why I'm here. If you're going to dish it out, you need to be able to take it. I trust the links from some on the right, but I choose to ignore yours. You're always demanding that your questions be answered, I'm giving you plenty of answers. You just don't like my answers. I don't like your questions. So, I believe we're even.

@GGY- charity? at the rate this admin is going, there is not going to be any money to give to charity. Mortgage interest deductions? how many people are in foreclosure or lost their homes to foreclosure? Im sure the hard working will continue to clean up the mess the last 4 has put us in, regardless of who ends up in Washington. Just need to put the brakes on it before it goes completely over the cliff.

Oh, Mary Lou. I have done my research. The whole sub-prime mortgage fiasco began under GWB's American Dream Act - creating 100% mortgages. He was videoed with the big announcement. I think it was 2002-2003. More people still own their homes than have lost them to foreclosure. It's scary to think about the deductions being lost to middle class families, isn't it? Being in denial about it won't keep it from happening. Charities will suffer, too, including churches, when the Republicans take away as much as they can from the middle class.

Read your Constitution......any function not clearly delegated to the federal government belongs to the states. Our government has overstepped its bounds and must be pared down. Our founding fathers would be in a state of disbelief!

Whoever wins, I'll encourage people to view President Clinton's and President Obama's campaign closing speeches. Definitive and uplifting messages delivered by master orators, the explainer-in-chief and the Commander-in-Chief. Listening should make the losers feel better and the winners feel great.

@PATCH: why are all these Coach posts being allowed to stand on your Opinion sites? Isn't advertising in these comment threads against the TOU? They are out of place and so annoying. Tell them they should pay for your ads, please!

Trust me, they annoy me more than they annoy you :/ We occasionally get hackers who post dozens of these at once, and I don't always see them. Please flag them if you see one.

We always ban them, but then they just go ahead and create a new email address and do it again! So frustrating.
